Objectives

Introduce the engineer to the concept of industrial system control and to the various aspects to consider when in need of control strategies.

Upon completing this course, the engineer:

  • Will be able to relate to the necessity of control systems;
  • Will be able to design basic control systems;
  • Will be able to understand the hardware and software implications when designing a control system for their electrical or mechanical system;
  • Will have the necessary understanding to be able to write requirements for a control system needed for their electrical or mechanical system.

Electrical and mechanical engineers who want to learn the basics of industrial control systems.

  • Introduction to control
    • The need for control – Examples – Definition of a control system.
  • Sequential control
    • Sequential control using Ladder diagrams – function blocks – structured text – Sequential Function Charts – examples.
  • Continuous control
    • Linear system modeling – stability – closed loop – PID control – examples.
  • Implementing control systems
    • Sensors, actuators, controllers. Introduction to communication protocols, analog and digital signals, and Human-Machine Interface.
  • Standards
    • Introduction to safety and programming standards used for system control applications.
